According to Pro Football Weekly, the day the Colts parted with veteran receiver Qadry Ismail, they were stating their confidence and trust in third-year man Reggie Wayne.

But Dungy, normally silent with his motivation and criticism, said he still needs to see Wayne prove his worth by becoming more consistent.

The Colts see Wayne as a potential-packed player because of his quickness and natural athleticism, but he does not trust his hands enough, according to one AFC South scout.

"He can get open; thats not the problem," the scout told PFW. "He catches only about two out of three balls Peyton [Manning] throws him. You arent going to make it in this league with that ratio. Hes going to have a hard time improving in game situations because Peyton is not going his way on third-down or goal-line situations. Hes not there yet."

Reserve halfback James Mungro, after missing the opener, should be ready to play Sunday, Dungy said. Dominic Rhodes is still working on a limited basis and isnt ready to return to action.

Also Thursday, third-team quarterback Cory Sauter practiced for a second consecutive day after signing Tuesday. Sauter, who played with the Colts through the first half of last season, was released midway through the season and signed with the Chicago Bears.

The Colts released Sauter last season with the idea of creating a roster spot because of an injury at another position. They had hoped to re-sign him, but the Bears claimed him off waivers.
