David Terrell took more snaps with the first team offense during Wednesdays practice than he usually does.

But in light of the teams embarrassing defeat to the 49ers, Terrell downplayed the fact that he stands to get more chances Sunday to supplant Dez White as the starter at wide receiver.

White has yet to emerge as the threat Bears coaches long have thought he could be while everybody in the organization agrees its time for a No. 1 draft pick, Terrell, to start playing like one. Terrell was told to expect more snaps Sunday.

"The time is now, for everybody, not just me," Terrell said.

White didnt seem fazed by the possibility Terrell was gaining on him.

"I assume well be playing about the same," said White, who caught three passes for 28 yards against the 49ers. "Its too early to panic but not too early to buckle down and get your focus."

According to Chicago Sun-Times staffer Mike Mulligan, White is the fastest player on the team, but his speed rarely translates to the field. He has average hands and is best running crossing routes over the middle. A straight-line runner without a lot of moves, he nonetheless is used far too often on the bubble screen.

Mulligan went on to note that although the team likes to tie up its young talent with long-term deals, White most likely will be allowed to test the market in the offseason.

Rookie receiver Bobby Wade, whose fumbled punt against the 49ers cost the Bears, said Wednesday he didnt expect to return punts Sunday. Veteran R.W. McQuarters might take his place, though McQuarters will believe it when he sees it.

"In four years Ive been here Ive probably worked on catching punts every day and returned [12] punts," McQuarters said. "We still got Ahmad [Merritt] back there. Its almost like you dont know whats coming, but when it comes, you just have to go out and do it."','9/11/2003','8:35:00 AM','Thursday'10006,2003,55 5629,17,2,'Tice Clears The Air; Burleson
