Thomas. The 2001 offensive rookie of the year will start against the Niners today, but hell have to share the ball with second-year man Adrian Peterson.

"Youll see both Adrian and Anthony throughout the game," offensive coordinator John Shoop said. "One of the things that our personnel lends itself toward now is that we could have a number of different guys carrying the ball. With Stan (Pritchett) at the fullback position, hes got a little ability to carry the ball, as well as obviously our quarterback. Rabih Abdullah has done a lot of good things this preseason."

Thats another way of saying Thomas didnt play well enough last season and this preseason to be "The Man."

"Anthony will start the game," Shoop said. "Well try to keep them off balance. If one guy gets hot, and we feel good about it, and hes getting strong, well keep pumping it to him."

Thomas isnt quite sure how he feels about light duty, but thats probably because hes unfamiliar with the concept of sharing time.

"I really dont know, never having been in that situation," he said. "I really cant say from this standpoint now. I know that were going in with two running backs."

Thomas carried 214 times last season despite missing the final four games with a fractured left index finger. As a rookie, he carried 278 times in 14 games. In his final two seasons at Michigan, the workhorse had 620 attempts, and he averaged 231 tries over four seasons. Thomas averaged 228 carries a season as a four-year starter in high school.

"The more carries I get, the better I get because the more you get to feel the defense out, get a feel for whats going on in the game," he said. "When you get 2 or 3 carries a game or 2 or 3 carries a quarter, I dont think thats good for any running back."

Thomas has been a backup before. As a rookie, he played behind James Allen in four of the first five games until he rushed for 188 yards against the Bengals on Oct. 21 in a game he didnt start.
