of five consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons was snapped last season. So was his streak of four straight seasons with 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards - a feat unprecedented in the NFL.

A high ankle sprain slowed Faulk over the second half of 2002. He missed two games entirely, and had no more than 11 carries over the final five contests. But he wanted to keep playing, even though it was obvious he wasnt at full speed.

"I dont think he showed me anything that I didnt already know about him," quarterback Kurt Warner said. "Hes one of those big-time competitors that wants to be in there, win, lose or draw, whether hes healthy or not healthy."

As he enters his 10th NFL season, Faulk is at an age when even the best running backs begin to slow down. But he said all the talk about hitting the wall doesnt provide extra motivation.

"Im motivated myself," he said. "Im a competitor. I want to compete. I want to do well. What people say, I dont thrive on that.

"Im probably my worst critic. Im probably the one saying to myself: What are you going to do now? Whats wrong? Can you do this? Can you do that?"

Nonetheless, those who know Faulk best say theres a part of him that wants to show everyone hes still got it.

"You bet thats a part of it," Martz said. "Youre darn right it is. Hes got some pride to him. Hes on a mission in that respect, Im sure.

"I dont mean to speak for him. But heres a great player, and to have people say hes injury-prone, hes this, hes that - you bet hes going to respond. You bet he will."

Physically, Faulk simply says, "I feel good." When he has been on the practice field, or in that one preseason exposure in Buffalo, he has looked frisky.

"Marshall can still get around the corner," said running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery.

"People probably think Im nuts in saying this, but I think hes stronger and faster than hes ever been," Martz said. "I think Marshalls capable of having his best year ever."

Also of interest. ...
