those Faulk dashes up the middle on a draw play.

"You know what?" he said. "I got too much."

It probably seemed that way Aug. 23 in Buffalo. In two quarters of action, Faulk had 11 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown, and caught seven passes for 60 yards and a TD.

On the Rams opening series, Faulk took four straight handoffs.

"I know he was probably muttering under his breath," head coach Mike Martz later joked.

But there was a method to Martzs madness:

"We wanted to get him into his game mode. ... get him hit and knocked around a little bit," Martz said. "He took a direct hit on that knee, and he came away feeling really great about it. He had no residual effects from it."

(That was same knee that Faulk had checked out earlier in the preseason for soreness.)

"Weve got some young backs standing over there. If they go two or three plays, and theyre waving at the sideline like theyve got to come out - well, heres a guy, with (11) carries and seven catches in the first half.

"He didnt skip a beat. He didnt come out. And so these young guys are going, Wow. Thats what a real player is like. The message is very clear to these guys. The standards been set."

"Theres a certain toughness, a competitiveness, thats required to do that. It was fun to watch, to me, the greatest player in the game right now, function and go about his job the way he did. He basically put a show on for all of us."

And that was it, Faulks only action of the preseason -- a snapshot of greatness. Was it enough to ease concerns over whether Faulk, at age 30, can hold up over the long haul this season? Probably not.

But its not as if the Rams havent won games without Faulk. Theyre 3-3 when Faulk doesnt play over the last three seasons. Its just a lot easier when hes in the lineup.

"Marshalls probably the most consistent player Ive ever been around," Martz said. "He just doesnt change. Hes such a tough guy down inside. Hes very focused and knows exactly how to play this game at the highest level. And he knows what it takes to prepare to do that."
