York didnt publicly command Erickson to throw long passes and take big chances, but its widely understood the new coachs 49ers will be playing a vertical game.

"Its going to be exciting to see what we can really do," Jeff Garcia said. "Every member of this offense is looking forward to really testing our athletic abilities. I think well be more aggressive, more assertive and more fun to watch. These should be the types of games that you cant turn away from for a second."

But as San Jose Mercury News staff columnist Mark Purdy noted earlier this week, the most important thing to know about the new 49ers offense is, it is not the new 49ers offense.

Current coordinator Gregg Knapp took over the offense in 2001, after Mariucci spent his first four seasons with San Francisco calling his own plays for the most part. The two men had a transition season before Knapp assumed nearly total down-by-down control in 2002 -- with Mariucci making the big-picture decisions (including the much-maligned choice to run out the clock in the first half against Tampa Bay in the playoffs).

Some of last seasons offensive decisions were made out of necessity, Knapp explained.

"What happened last year that hasnt been talked about much is that our defense got so banged up, our ball possession on offense became so critical," he said. "We wanted to give the defense as much of a break as possible. Our offense ended up fourth in the league in time of possession, and first in third-down conversions."

When the front office decided to keep Knapp through the head-coaching change, it signaled a definite endorsement of his skills. Although Erickson inherited Knapp, the two say they have been on the same page conceptually since their
