were drawing parallels.... The productivity of both teams starting tailbacks -- Holmes and Jamal Lewis, who have combined for 11 rushing touchdowns through three games, would be another.

The eight other backs among the top 10 rushers in the league have scored just nine touchdowns combined. ','9/28/2003','3:35:00 AM','Sunday'0,2003,206 5778,21,4,'Edwards Vows Martin Will Get At Least 20 Carries...','As reported by New York Daily News sports writer Rich Cimini, facing a virtual must-win against the Bill Parcells coached Cowboys, head coach Herman Edwards has made no secret of his desire to run, run, run the ball.

"Were going to run the ball. Write it down," said Edwards.

The Jets, coming off the Edwards-Woody Johnson imbroglio, need a victory to restore a sense of calm, especially with a bye next week. Imagine two weeks of 0-4.

"That 0 gets bigger and bigger," Edwards said. "Its like a big donut after a while."

The Jets biggest failure has been the ground game. The pass-run ratio is 70-30, putting too much pressure on quarterback Vinny Testaverde. And their primary rushing weapon -- Curtis Martin -- has been stuffed eight times for a loss/no gain, the same number of rushing first downs for the team.

Martin (40 carries for 133 yards) has been hurt by lack of opportunities, inconsistent run-blocking and, perhaps, his own decline. Privately, the Jets are concerned that Martin, 30, may have lost his burst to the hole. Theyre not sure about that, which is one of the reasons they want to get him the ball at least 20 times.

"We have to stay committed to it," Edwards said. "We cant worry if its a boring football game."

It may not be easy. The Cowboys defense ranks sixth against the run (75.5 yards per game), almost 90 yards better than the Jets rush defense. Its an atypical Parcells defense in that its small, but quick. The front four averages 285 pounds per man and the linebackers are under 245.
