the team closely, coaches are determined to establish the run today in an attempt to set up play-action. Doug Johnson needs to get a little breathing room in the passing game, and everything Atlanta tries might work better if theyd spread the field more than they have so far.
That said, I find their failure to mount a serious rushing attack surprising given the talent on hand. If nothing else, it raises questions about the backfield rotation.
Granted, the units inability to sustain drives complicates matters. Twenty one of the Falcons 44 possessions this season have been for three plays or less, with five ending in touchdowns, three in interceptions, four at the end of a half or game, and one in a safety. And not holding onto the ball means several things dont happen.
First and foremost, it means T.J. Duckett (15 carries, 62 yards this season) doesnt play as much.
In fact, you might just as well ditch the "as" so the sentence ends with "doesnt play much."
Duckett carried the ball three times for six yards against the Buccaneers last Sunday. Warrick Dunn finished with seven yards on nine carries.
So, the obvious question is this: Given the success Carolina had running 230-pound Stephen Davis into the heart of Tampa Bays defense, wouldnt it have made sense for the Falcons to take a similar approach with the 254-pound Duckett?
But as I first reported in this weeks Team Notes, head coach Dan Reeves is tired of hearing the question and he insists he hasnt lost faith in the second-year man.
Nor has he answered the question. ...
Ill remind you, at least at this point, nobody has questioned Ducketts ability. In fact, in an article published Friday, ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli shared a conversation in which an unnamed NFL head coach said he plans to call the Falcons to see what it might take to get Duckett away from them.
"Hell, they dont use him, and we feel like hes a talented guy," the coach said of Duckett, who has 20 fewer carries
