Post staff writer Nunyo Demasio, Darnerien McCants has solidified his status as the Redskins third receiver. And head coach Steve Spurrier says that wont change, despite the return of rookie wideout Taylor Jacobs.

McCants bolstered his standing with four catches for 67 yards during Sundays overtime loss to the New York Giants. McCants also added a touchdown, and Spurrier has noted the second-year players penchant for scores.

McCants has only six catches this season, but two are for touchdowns, tying him with Rod Gardner for the team lead among receivers. In 12 NFL games, McCants has four touchdowns.

"I dont know what exactly all that means," Spurrier said. "We get into a three- or four- wide receiver set with [Laveranues Coles] and Rod, they are usually out there with the defensive backs, so [McCants] gets an opportunity to work inside against linebackers and so forth. So thats probably the reason for that."

During his senior season at Delaware State, McCants caught 32 passes, but half were for touchdowns, setting a school and MEAC record.

Spurrier will have five wideouts on the active roster for the first time when the Skins take on the Patriots tomorrow, when Jacobs is expected to make his NFL debut. Jacobs, a second-round draft choice, had been projected as the No. 3 wideout during training camp, but appeared to be beaten out by Patrick Johnson by the preseason finale when his pancreas was bruised in a freak accident.

Jacobs, who lost several pounds during his time on the injury list, isnt expected to participate in more than 15 plays Sunday, Spurrier said.

On the injury front. ...

Tight end Zeron Flemister will return from a strained Achilles tendon as expected, making his first appearance since being hurt in the season opener. Robert Royal has started in Flemisters absence. That wont change Sunday, with Royal remaining with the first team.

Also of interest. ...
