Ferguson is still listed as probable on the injury report.

"If I feel like I can go, Im going to (play)," Ferguson said. "As long as Im not hurting the team. ... Then Ill play."

Despite battling through ankle and knee injuries this season, Ferguson is leading the Packers receiving corps with 12 catches for 116 yards and one touchdown.

Testing out a new protective cast that covers his broken left thumb and much of his wrist and forearm, fullback Nick Luchey returned to the practice field Friday still clinging to the hope that he can be in the lineup Monday night.

"Its sore, but for the most part its a lot better than what I expected," said Luchey, who broke the thumb at practice Wednesday when a tipped pass deflected awkwardly into his hand.

"If I have to play through pain, it wouldnt really be a problem. Were just worried about those bones moving thats been shattered."

As things are now, Luchey believes he can avoid surgery and let the hand heal naturally. If further damage were done to his thumb however, metal pins would have to be surgically inserted for stability, sidelining him for a matter of weeks. ...

Wesley Walls finally returned to practice Friday and appears well enough to play Monday night at Chicago.

His presence could be helpful.

In an article published Monday, Pro Football Weekly suggested the team might not have signed Antonio Freeman prior to Week Two had Walls been healthy.

Offensive coordinator Tom Rossley had drawn up many plays for Week 1 that implemented two-TE sets with Walls and Bubba Franks. David Martin stepped in to fill the void, but injuries to Ferguson and Donald Driver made it difficult of coaches to implement their full package.

Without the passing-game packages the offense worked on through the preseason, the Packers reverted to "West Coast offense 101" in their first three games. But Rossley promises to unveil what they expected to be an explosive
