Starting wide receiver David Patten injured his knee in last Sundays 23-16 victory over the New York Jets and is questionable for the Redskins game. If Patten gets scratched, the 5-foot-9, 193-pound Branch will be elevated to a starter opposite Troy Brown in traditional two-receiver formations.

Head coach Bill Belichick said Thursday that Branch has played a full complement of downs in past games and is equal to the assignment. Branch will need to call on that experience against excellent Redskins cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Fred Smoot.

"Deion is an every-down receiver for us," Belichick said. "We play our receivers in somewhat of a rotation. Sometimes that is the result of injury status and other times we use multiple receivers. A lot of times we have three receivers on the field and hes one of them."

Branch, a second-round pick (65th overall) out of Louisville, made an immediate impact as a rookie. Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis let Brady operate in a spread formation with multiple receivers last season and Branch fit neatly into that package. Branch finished second among AFC rookies with 43 receptions and third with 489 yards despite missing the final three games with an injury.

Branch was a non-factor in the Patriots loss at Buffalo in this seasons opener but rebounded well the following week. In the Patriots win at Philadelphia, Branch was Bradys receiver of choice with six receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. He had two catches for 25 yards in last Sundays home win against the Jets.

Branch wouldnt speculate on Pattens status and insisted the flow of the game will determine his effectiveness against the Redskins.

"It all depends on how the game flows and you can never tell how thats going to go," Branch said. "You hope they can go to you, but you just have to go with the game plan.
