Wide receiver Randy Moss, who has back spasms, also practiced Friday for the first time this week. He was upgraded to probable and will play Sunday.
Culpeppers injury normally requires at least two weeks of recovery, but the quarterback has made considerable progress since he was hurt last Sunday in Detroit. He landed in the end zone on a touchdown run and was hit by Lions linebacker Wali Rainer.
"If he continues to progress the way hes progressing, were going to have a tough decision to make, Tice said. "I dont see that the injury can get any worse.
Culpeppers status will depend on how much pain hes in and how well he can move around behind the line of scrimmage. His mobility in Fridays practice was good, Tice said.
"If it was up to him, hed have me announce him as the starter today, Tice said.
The staff has been impressed with Culpeppers commitment to rehabilitating his back.
"Every time I go down there, hes getting another treatment, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said.
Though Frerotte, a veteran of 10 NFL seasons and five teams, doesnt have Culpeppers running ability, the Vikings dont expect to change much of their game plan if he starts. Frerotte was 9-for-21 for 184 yards, a touchdown and an interception in relief against Detroit.
