James, the Colts starting running back and leading rusher three of the past four seasons, missed practice Wednesday and again Thursday with a back injury sustained this past Sunday against Jacksonville.

And tight end Marcus Pollard was admitted to the hospital Thursday, but Dungy said it was expected that Pollard will be fine. Dungy did not know why Pollard was admitted.

James, originally listed as probable on the injury report with what Dungy said was a "sore back," was downgraded to questionable Wednesday.

"Hes getting treatment every day and itll probably be a game-time decision," Dungy said as the AFC South-leading Colts prepared to play the New Orleans Saints in the Louisiana Superdome Sunday.

"The doctors have told us its nothing he can do further damage to. Hes not going to be at risk playing. It will just be how the pain is and how he can cut and run. Were going to play him if hes ready to go. I want him to be healthy and feel good.

"Weve got enough backs where if hes not 100 percent and we dont need to play him, well wait until he is 100 percent."

If James cant play, reserve running back Dominic Rhodes could play against the Saints, with reserves Ricky Williams and James Mungro 100 percent healthy.

"Well probably use all the guys," Dungy said. "Well try to put them in situations they do best."

Rhodes, an 1,100-yard rusher in 2001, missed all of last season with a knee injury and has yet to play in a pre- or regular-season game this season. He said Thursday
