Tice plans to let Culpepper, whos still listed as doubtful on the injury report, practice Friday. Hell then make his decision on whether to hold him out against the 49ers based on how Culpepper feels and what the medical staff tells him.

"Its not an injury that puts you in the hospital or anything like that," Tice said. "Its a pain thing. If he can handle the pain, then hes tough. Probably tougher than I am."

Asked specifically Wednesday how much pain he can take, Culpepper said: "In this game, its a physical game, very physical, and you have to be able to play with some type of pain. Everybody plays with some pain sometimes, but you have to be smart about it. Thats another thing. Im definitely smart about this thing too.

"Im not going to go out there and injure myself any worse, hopefully. Im just trying to go out and make sure I dont nag this thing or continue to nag it. If its not getting any better by Friday, then well step back a little bit and let me heal. Im going to give myself time to heal, but at the same time Im going to try get aggressive and see what I can do. ..."

In the meantime, Frerotte is preparing to possibly make his first start since September of last year, when he played for Cincinnati. Frerotte eventually fell to third string with the Bengals.

"I expected a lot more from that year, but it turned out to be the same Cincinnati that I hoped it wasnt going to be," Frerotte said.

Frerotte held his own Sunday against the Lions. He completed two 72-yard passes -- one to Randy Moss and another to Kelly Campbell for a touchdown. Moss probably would have scored on his catch, but Frerotte underthrew him.

"Ill just do what I can out there and hopefully its good enough for him," Frerotte said.

Still, the 10-year player is comfortable with the game plan drawn up by Vikings offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, having played in similar systems in the past.
