As Davis spoke to the media about Holcombs status, Couch stayed late and worked on passing drills.

Following his performance Sunday, Holcomb was asked to rate his pain on a scale of 1 to 10 and gave it a 15. After 2 and a half days of treatment, Holcomb said the pain had subsided.

"Its down to about a 6," he said.

Holcomb acknowledged that he was hurting badly at halftime Sunday when the Browns told Couch to get ready. So how was he was able to manage the pain?

"Adrenaline, tape and prayer," he said. "Its one of those things youve got to block it out. You just got to tape it up, tape it tighter and go."

Holcomb promises he wont take any unnecessary risks and play Sunday if hes not completely ready. That wouldnt be fair to his coaches or teammates, he said.

Holcomb has already shown his toughness. So why would he risk further injury by taking the field?

"To play," he said. "I just want to play. Im a competitor."

Couch, who has remained supportive, is certain Holcomb will do the right thing.

"Kelly will do whats best for the team," Couch said.

"If he cant go out there and play the way hes capable of, then Im sure he wont go. Hes a tough guy. He has proved that and if theres a chance he can go out there and be effective then hell go out and do that."

Dennis Northcutt has a broken rib and is listed as questionable for Sundays game.

Northcutt missed last weeks game with what the team described as a chest injury. On Wednesday, however, Butch Davis revealed for the first time that the speedy wideout has a hairline fracture in one of his ribs.

The 5-foot-11 175-pounder initially got hurt in the season opener against Indianapolis and then aggravated it last week in practice.

Northcutt was one of the Browns best offensive players last season. He caught 38 passes for 601 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned two punts for TDs and ran for another score.

Northcutt has 10 receptions for 119 yards this season.','9/25/2003','1:25:00 AM','Thursday'0,2003,162 5735,8,4,'Couch To Start This Sunday...','According
