"I mean, this isnt a sore ankle," Brunell said. "Its an open wound and I have to be smart. I need for it to improve."

A key issue in the quarterback debate is the possibility that Brunell might not see the field again as a Jaguar if Leftwich performs well. It would be an incredible waste of money -- Brunell counts $6.75 million against the salary cap this season -- although if the team is going nowhere, it might be best to look toward the future.

"I understand how this works, no doubt about it," Brunell said. "Ive been around. Ive seen a lot of things."

In 1995, Jacksonvilles expansion season, Brunell was the untested young guy and Steve Beuerlein was the starter. Brunell took over the job in midseason, and Beuerlein was gone the next year.

"That was different. Steve had been here maybe a month longer than I had," Brunell said. "He hadnt been the starter for eight years."

Del Rio has stuck with his desire to play the guys who give the team the best chance to win. He said he is "optimistic" about Brunells return, but said he may not announce anything until Sunday just before game time.
