More important to the 49ers, Streets scored in each of the first two games, making teams pay for focusing most of their attention -- primarily in the form of double coverage -- on Owens near the end zone.

"If people want to start doubling T.O., they can go right ahead," Yarber said. "Weve got somebody else who can step up and make plays.

"Against the Rams, the safety was supposed to stay in the middle of the field. But he saw T.O. uncovered and went over there. Tai had his defender one on one."

And once Jeff Garcia saw what was going on he quickly hit Streets for a 16-yard touchdown pass. "If we can continue to do that," head coach Dennis Erickson said, "then teams are going have to make a decision about how they are going to cover everything."

Streets emerged last season after J.J. Stokes, the No. 2 receiver, suffered a knee injury. Streets pounced, making 72 catches for 756 yards and five touchdowns. With Owens making 100 catches, it marked just the second time in history that two 49ers receivers had at least 70 catches in the same season. (Owens had 97 and Jerry Rice 75 in 2000).

During the offseason, Streets tried his best to ignore rumors hinting that the Niners were looking to bring a more established veteran in via free agency. He instead used his mind for more constructive purposes, such as becoming a better route runner.

"Tai has made a concentrated effort to run his routes with more discipline," Yarber said. "When you have free access -- when its not bump-and-run coverage -- you have to be very precise. You have to be within a yard or even a half-a-yard of precision.

"Tai is a pleasure to coach. When youre making corrections or giving instructions, he looks you in the eye and hes very receptive to what youre saying. He sees it on the film and hes able to take it from the film to the playing field."

But as the former University of Michigan standout noted, nothing is more helpful than playing time.
