hell watch tomorrows game from the sidelines with receiver DWayne Bates, who was ruled out yesterday due to a bruised foot.

And as Star Tribune staffer Mark Craig noted this morning, with Bates out, Kelly Campbell -- all 5-10, 173 pounds of him -- finally will get his opportunity to be an every-down player.

"This is my chance to let the coaches know I can play every down," Campbell said. "I am going to win this battle with coach [Mike] Tice. I dont know how long it will take, but I will convince him I am an every-down player in the NFL."

Campbell, who joined the Vikings last season as an undrafted free agent from Georgia Tech, already has shown hes one of the more explosive playmakers. He has the teams longest reception (51 yards) and rush (19) of the season.

Not surprisingly, team officials worry that a man of Campbells diminutive stature cant withstand the pounding of lining up every play.

Campbells weight is rare in the NFL. In fact, after performing an Internet search of active NFL rosters, Craig could only name four players with listed weights lighter than Campbells.

Campbell claims hes "closer to 175," but Craigs search was based on listed weights.

Two of the players lighter than Campbell are kickers Martin Gramatica (5-8, 170) of Tampa Bay and Paul Edinger (5-8, 168) of Chicago. The others are receivers Zuriel Smith (5-11, 166) of Dallas and former Viking Troy Walters (5-7, 172) of Indianapolis.

"Yeah, I may be listed at 173, but I play more like a 210-pound person," Campbell told Craig. "Im no big guy. But I still run through people like [Vikings linebacker] Nick Rogers. Make sure you put that in there."

Rogers (6-2, 250), who also played with Campbell at Georgia Tech, was listening to -- and laughing at -- Campbell proclaiming his power.

Campbell is known for keeping the locker room and practice field loose and upbeat with his sense of humor and playful interaction
