"Im used to this," he said. "Except this year Im having to come out of the bullpen a little bit early."

Earlier might be better this season. Sundays opponent, Atlanta, plays a 3-4 defense, a style Keyshawn Johnson believes can be taken advantage of in the secondary.

The Falcons are last in the league in total defense, including 29th against the pass.

Johnson leads the Bucs with 15 receptions for 185 yards and is fifth in the NFC with 11 first- down catches. McCardell, who has three first-down catches, is third on the team, behind running back Michael Pittman, with eight receptions for 94 yards.

"Keyshawn and I are going to have to pick our game up," McCardell said. "Theres pressure if we put it on ourselves. Ive been in this situation before. We just have to go out and make plays.

"Thats all weve got to do and that takes all the pressure off."

According to Associated Press sports writer Fred Goodall, McCardell was fined $12,500 by the NFL for two illegal blocks, including one that sidelined Carolina lineman Kavika Pittman for the rest of the season.

The 12th-year pro also was cited by the league for using an illegal crackback block on a running play during the first quarter.

McCardell said Friday the blocks were legal and he has filed an appeal of the fine.

"The one on Kavika Pittman wasnt a high-low," he said. "I really wasnt trying to hurt anybody. My intent is not to hurt anybody out on that field like that with an illegal block."

"They know its a cut-off block. Most receivers cut off the end of the line of scrimmage. It just happened that way. My regrets go out to him, but I was not trying to hurt him."

Gruden declined to comment on whether the blocks were legal.

"All I know is were remorseful that a player got injured," Gruden
