reporter Katherine Smith suggested this morning, Keenan McCardells goal of 100 receptions seemed unattainable at the beginning of the season. The Bucs had multiple receiving options and head coach Jon Gruden likes to spread the ball around.
But with No. 3 wideout Joe Jurevicius out at least four weeks with a torn knee ligament, McCardell might just reach his goal. Keyshawn Johnson, too.
The loss of Jurevicius means a bigger workload for the Bucs starting receivers. Not that either player will mind.
"If they had their way, theyd get all the balls," wide receivers coach Richard Mann said. "But were going to just call the offense. Coach Gruden isnt going to hold back.
"This is a part of football -- players get injured and somebodys got to step up."
Statistically, the Bucs are the No. 1 passing team in the NFL through two games. But as their passing yardage increases, Brad Johnsons targets have decreased.
First, the team lost tight end and over-the-middle threat Rickey Dudley to a preseason injury. The loss of Jurevicius is a bigger blow because of his increased production, which dates to last years postseason.
Jurevicius had developed into one of the Bucs biggest third-down and red-zone threats. Before he got hurt against Carolina on Sunday, two of his four receptions were for first downs.
Of his four receptions in the 17-0 victory against Philadelphia, two produced touchdowns and the others went for first downs.
Part of Jurevicius success was his ability to create mismatches with his size (6-foot- 5, 230 pounds). His replacement, Karl Williams (5-10, 177), will have to be creative.
"We still have some mismatches there," Williams said. "Where Joe has the size, I try to use my quickness and my experience. That alone will create some mismatches. This offense is going to create some mismatches.
"As a receiver, thats what you look for. I look for a linebacker where I know Ive got the advantage of quickness."
