at times. Several passes in Sundays 23-20 victory over Cincinnati were overthrown or underthrown. At times, he has had plenty of protection but nowhere to throw the ball. He finished with 103 passing yards Sunday.

When a reporter observed after the Cincinnati game that Gannon appeared afraid to throw the ball, Callahan scoffed.

"Hes not afraid," the coach said. "Hes a warrior."

But as Lancaster pointed out, hes an injured warrior.

Against the Titans, he hyperextended his left knee. Against the Bengals, a hit early in the game induced back spasms that bothered him the rest of the way. Gannon, who hasnt missed a start since his arrival, is suddenly getting banged up.

While the teams 1-1 start is understandable, especially with an opener on the road against a tough opponent like the Titans, but nobody can figure out why the offense hasnt been up to snuff.

Including the Raiders.

Apparently the slow start has resulted in a difference of opinion in the locker room about why the offense has stalled. Some players -- wide receivers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown among them -- blame the changes on the playbook, saying the Raiders made too many alterations to stay ahead of opponents rather than relying on their bread-and-butter plays from last year. Others say change hasnt come swiftly enough. And so confusion sets in.

"It gets disappointing when you go to the sideline and the tailbacks looking at us like, `What happened? " guard Frank Middleton said. "And were looking at him like, `What happened? And the wide receivers are looking around like, `What happened? Its hard when nobody has the answers."

Until the offense gets rolling, the answers wont get any easier. And Gannon seems to know hes on the spot.

"There are question marks as to why we havent played as well or as effectively as we have in the past," he told the Denver media. "But weve just got to continue to work at it and try to get better."
