as the Raiders have stumbled out of the gate and sunk to the lower reaches of the NFL in total offense, one question stands out:
What is wrong with Rich Gannon?
"Theres nothing wrong with Rich," head coach Bill Callahan claimed on Wednesday. "When you dont make plays and you miss some opportunities to hit some guys, theres all types of things that enter in that. To say its one thing or one person, no, thats not the problem."
Maybe not. But through two games, Gannons performances dont bear much resemblance to those of a year ago, when he was the league MVP and led the Raiders to the Super Bowl.
In 2002, he was No. 2 in the NFL in passer rating (97.3) and led the league with 4,689 yards. Through two games, his pace would give him nearly 2,000 fewer passing yards (2,936), and the Raiders are languishing with the leagues 25th-ranked passing attack.
Once again: What is wrong with Rich Gannon?
"Well, were trying to find a way to make a couple of first downs right now," Gannon told the Denver media in a conference call Wednesday. He refused to speak to Bay Area reporters, skipping the weekly press gathering that has been part of his routine since he joined the Raiders in 1999.
Granted, Gannon has been hindered by factors beyond his control. In the Raiders opener, a 25-20 loss at Tennessee, a rash of penalties left the Raiders consistently facing second- or third-and-long situations, which puts incredible pressure on even the best quarterbacks. He has also been without his best deep threat, Jerry Porter, since the first quarter against Tennessee. Porter had hernia surgery last week and will be at least a few weeks in returning.
"It certainly hasnt helped us the first two weeks," Gannon said of Porters absence. "Hes a great player, and hes a big part of what we are trying to do. And he was a big part of our success last year, so obviously his absence is significant. But at the same time, we have other players who have to step up."
Presumably, that includes Gannon himself.
He has appeared uncertain and off-target
