Realizing that an NBA career was unlikely, Gates decided to take a shot at making it with the Chargers as a rookie free agent, which he did after impressing the coaches with his physical skills and work ethic during training camp.
But regardless of how they got here, the Chargers will be relying on Peelle and Gates to get the job done on Sunday.
"Weve explored the options that are available to us and quite frankly there arent any, other than what were going to do," said Schottenheimer. It should be stressed that Vermeil went out of his way to state Gonzalez wasnt hurt badly.
"He bumped into a player but hes fine," the coach said when asked about the star tight end. "He went on and practiced."
Asked how Holmes looked, Vermeil replied: "He was fine. He worked good. He took more reps than I thought he would. We sort of let Priest control all of that because no one knows how he feels better
