As reported by Minneapolis Star News staffer Kevin Seifert,when it became clear the injured Michael Bennett would not be ready to start the season, the Vikings turned to a veteran who had never been given a chance to be a featured running back.

Although Moe Williams has rushed for 188 yards in two games this season, it was Doug Chapman the Vikings originally hoped would replace Bennett. But injuries have limited Chapman since the beginning of training camp, the latest a high ankle sprain suffered Aug. 22, and he could miss his second consecutive game Sunday at Detroit.

Now in his fourth season, Chapman has missed 27 of a possible 50 games for various reasons. He was inactive for his entire rookie year in 2000, and last season he missed the final 10 games because of internal bleeding caused by a hit on a kickoff return.

"Its frustrating, but I cant look at it that way," Chapman said. "Its a long season. It could be like the injury I had last year, where the season is over. But this is one I know Ill be back from. When I get back healthy Ill be able to contribute on the field."

Chapman played in the season opener at Green Bay two weeks after injuring the ankle. In retrospect, he said he might have come back too soon.

"I kind of pushed it a little bit," he said. "I didnt fully re-injure it, but I irritated it to the point where it set me back a little bit. But thats how it goes. Ill get back out there. ... I cant rush the healing process."
