beat man Curt Sylvester, if all goes well in practice the next three days, Az-Zahir Hakim could take his first snap in anger since Nov.17, 2002 when the Lions take on the Vikings this Sunday.

In case you missed it, Hakim suffered a potentially career-ending dislocated hip in the Lions 31-14 loss to the New York Jets last November.

Hakim refuses to recount the story of what happened and what he went through -- first in recovering from the hip injury and then the arthroscopic knee surgery during training camp -- but he is itching to end the ordeal.

The Lions probably did not see Hakim at his best in his 10 games with them last season. He caught 37 passes for 541 yards -- a respectable 14.6-yard average -- and scored one of his three touchdowns on a 64-yard play.

With rookie Charles Rogers joining Bill Schroeder as the outside receivers, Hakim is expected to do most of his work from the slot position where he was so effective during his first four NFL seasons in St. Louis.

"He adds some quickness. ...
