Stepping in as a starter is far different from coming in off the bench.

Expectations are higher. So is the pressure.

"Everybody knows this is his first time as a starter, lets be honest about this," Johnson said. "Its easy to come in as the backup and make plays. You come in the building on Monday morning as the starting quarterback, its a different responsibility. Everyone thought it was going to be easy. Its a tough job."

Davis, who went on a "gut feeling" when he named Holcomb his starter, wasnt surprised to hear that his quarterback had owned up to his shaky start.

"Thats the kind of leader he is," Davis said. "Hes tough on himself because he has high expectations. He has played well in the past, and wants to play well again."

Also of interest. ...

Third-string quarterback Josh Booty was caught off guard after learning he was waived on Wednesday.

"Its crazy," said Booty, who spent the past two seasons backing up Couch and Holcomb. "Wheres the loyalty?"

Booty was playing golf on Tuesday in Akron when Davis called to tell him he was no longer needed. The news stunned the 28-year-old, who played five seasons of pro baseball in the Florida Marlins organization before signing with the Browns in 2001.

Davis claims he made the move to free up a roster spot, and that it had nothing to do with Booty or his performance. The Browns did a survey of NFL games over the past five years and found that third-string quarterbacks were used in only 10 games, the coach added.

Booty figured he was in the Browns long-term plans.

Although he hadnt played in a regular-season game in three years, Booty received high praise from Davis and offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

Theres a strong possibility that either Holcomb or Couch wont be with the Browns next season, and Booty, who has a strong arm and feels he can someday start in the league, figured he would be a backup.

"Its crazy, man. They were telling me that I was climbing up the ladder," Booty said. "One of those two quarterbacks probably isnt going to be here next year."
