"Every once in a while you take some harder shots than you took at another time, and (it matters) where they come from. When you play the Pittsburgh Steelers, they come from all over," Vermeil said.

"He took a few good shots. Hes bumped and bruised. Hopefully, their running backs are bumped and bruised, too."

Vermeil bristled at the suggestion that he was coming under criticism for not lightening Holmes load.

"No disrespect for the media, but if I listened to what they said and allowed that to influence the decisions I make and my coaches make in regard to our personnel, Id have been fired a long time ago," he said.

"Plus, Im held responsible for the decisions I make and the things I say. Priest Holmes has touched the ball exactly the same number of times he touched it last year. Hes got seven more yards running and receiving. You just cant get wrapped up in it."

For what its worth. ...

Asked specifically if hed feel comfortable going with Johnson if necessary, Vermeil replied: "Larry Johnson can play. All we have to do is get him on the 46-man roster. If he was prepared to be a gunner on the spread punt we could have had him on the 46-man roster. But number one, we never worked him there and, number two, the position where he was working in training camp he wasnt really ready to do in an NFL game."

The coach added that Johnson got in some special teams work Wednesday that might help the newcomer get into the mix more quickly.

"We worked him some at gunner today," Vermeil explained. "Weve got to get him so he can handle a very intense position in special teams so if theres a need we can suit him up for no other reason than to do that. Believe me, I have confidence that hes ready to play. Yes."

As expected, receiver Curtis Jackson was released and replaced with former Arena League standout Chris Horn. Its not clear how long the team intends to play musical roster spots with these two, but as Vermeil suggested
