report listed him as questionable with a sore calf.

Whatever the case might be, Vermeil said Holmes, who hasnt undergone an MRI this week, would be "questionable to probable" for Sundays game at Houston, the first road test for the unbeaten Chiefs and a much-awaited homecoming for Holmes, a native of Texas.

"We held him out today and he did some running and weight training in the exercise room," Vermeil said. "Hes got a running backs body today."

Holmes, the NFLs offensive player of the year last season, underwent hip surgery in March. This season, he already has 53 touches, near tops in the league, even though team president Carl Peterson and others had indicated they planned to reduce his load.

While rushing for 122 yards and three touchdowns in a hard-fought 41-20 victory last Sunday over Pittsburgh, he absorbed some frightful punishment.

"He took some pretty good shots all over his body, so hes a little bit sore all over, just as he was last Wednesday," Vermeil said. "It was almost game time before he felt OK."

Holmes, who has led the NFL in yards from scrimmage each of the past two seasons, admitted he was more beat up than usual following the Pittsburgh game.

"Like they say, you getting hit by all 11 players you are going to come out of that game a little bruised up," he admitted. "As far as Im concerned, the toughness that I have, the awareness, the way that I work, Im always bouncing back every Sunday giving my team 100 percent."

Asked if he would practice on Thursday, Vermeil said, "I hope so. I havent talked to our trainers yet since practice."

If Holmes sits out -- which according to Tucker, does not appear the most likely possibility -- rookie Larry Johnson, the first-round draft pick out of Penn State, may see his first action of the year. He and Derrick Blaylock worked with the first team offense during Wednesdays session.

"Hopefully, [Holmes] will feel better tomorrow and get ready to go the next day," Vermeil said. "I saw Priest had a smile on his face."

Vermeil dismissed speculation
