"Hes got a little more presence in the huddle," offensive guard Adam Timmerman said. "He just walks in, kind of nonchalant, but with confidence in himself."

Bulger has more of a comfort level with the offense. Last year, simply calling a play in the huddle was a challenge.

"I dont have to constantly be thinking about the play," he said. "Im just spitting it out now. I know the concept, and I know whats in this week, and I can just say it and help out guys more rather than just worrying about myself."

He also has more of a comfort level with everything that goes with being a starting NFL quarterback, including getting mentally prepared to play.

"Last year at this time, I think I started getting nervous around Thursday, Friday," Bulger said. "But this year I know to put that off till Sunday."

The 49ers certainly present plenty of reasons to be nervous, especially coming off last weeks overwhelming victory over Chicago. They have a young defense that is showing signs of maturity. And if Bulger didnt have enough to worry about, the 49ers showed the Bears nearly every blitz known to man last week, sending corners, safeties and linebackers at Kordell Stewart.

"They blitzed the [expletive deleted] out of the Bears," Holt said. "They dogged the Bears all the way to the fourth quarter. So were thinking theyre going to come in and blitz the [expletive deleted] out of us as well."

It seems logical, especially considering Bulgers relative inexperience. But blitzing usually presents one-on-one opportunities for wide receivers, and Holt and Isaac Bruce got off to good starts with 100-yard receiving days against the Giants.

Of course, its hard to blitz the quarterback when hes handing off the football. And just about every football fan in America -- plus everyone in the Rams locker room -- expects Marshall Faulk to be more heavily involved in the offense this week.
