This year, theyre counting on him. Counting on him to prevent 0-1 from becoming 0-2. Counting on him to put what remains a talented team back on track. Counting on him to help defeat the Rams traditional rivals -- the San Francisco 49ers -- in todays home opener.

So this game is huge on several levels, not the least of which is that the quarterback job now appears to be Bulgers to lose.

For now, head coach Mike Martz wants no part of that discussion. But just the fact that he left next weeks QB situation open-ended speaks volumes. If Bulger plays well against the 49ers, it seems almost a certainty he will start the following Sunday in Seattle.

Will this all be too big for Bulger? This is a guy, remember, with just seven NFL regular-season starts.

"If I felt that way, we would probably take a different approach to this game," Martz said.

Last year, Bulger was an unknown quantity to his teammates. This year, they know him and believe in him.

"Weve got a tremendous amount of confidence in Marc," receiver Torry Holt said. "With what he did last year, and what hes done in the offseason and in training camp. And what I love about Marc, he has a tremendous amount of confidence in himself -- in what he can do, and what he adds to this football team."
