Of course, there have been games when they held Holmes to 23 (as a second-year reserve), 76 (as a starter) and 19 (as a reserve again).

How the Steelers control Holmes at Arrowhead Stadium today will be a huge factor in a game between a perennial AFC title contender and the home-team challenger who dreams of becoming one again.

"Im really looking forward to playing Pittsburgh," Holmes said Friday on his new weekly segment with KCFX-FM.

"Because Ive seen them a lot over the years, theyre almost like a rival to me," he said. "I know their personnel, but that doesnt make it any easier because they know me just as well."

The Steelers know him quite well, in fact.

"Nobody has to say anything about Priest Holmes. Everybody knows what hes capable of doing," Steelers receiver Plaxico Burress said this week when asked if the Steelers were talking about how to stop Holmes.

"The guy runs like a deer," said Burress, who knows a thing or two about running. "He runs with a spring about him, he plays with a swagger. Hes probably the best running back playing right now, and he knows it."

Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, a lifelong defensive coach who knows something about stopping running backs, also understands what makes Holmes so tough to stop.

"Hes got great vision and great balance," Cowher said. "He sees holes better and gets to the corner faster than people expect. Then he breaks tackles, and even when he falls, he falls forward.

"Vision, deceptive speed and great balance -- any one of those qualities can separate a great back from a normal one, and hes got all three. Im glad for Priest. Hes a class act, the ultimate pro. Ive got so much respect for him."

Holmes justified the new extension he received last week -- and proved he was fully recovered from last years hip injury four days later by amassing 183 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns against San Diego.

However, as Dean noted: Those yards will be difficult to come by against Pittsburghs more imposing defense,
