that he successfully played to win a close one in the fourth quarter, a strategy he once ridiculed then-Tampa Bay head coach Tony Dungy for using.

"Our defense was playing pretty well," Spurrier said. "It would have been pretty stupid to just keep turning it over."

Patrick Ramsey threw just 10 passes in the second half, completing five for 29 yards with one interception and one fumble. His biggest play on the winning drive was a 24-yard scramble.

"When we were dropping back in the second half, bad things were happening," Brindise said. "We were running the ball very well, so we felt that was our M.O., so we went with it."

Brindise couldnt help but smile when reminded of what he had just said -- that running the ball became Spurriers M.O.

"Its a different M.O. than he normally has," Brindise said. "But winning and only scoring 16 is better than losing and scoring 30 any day."

As Spurrier pointed out Thursday, one game does not make a trend. Asked if using the run to set up the pass is something he might be doing more this year, the coach said: "Could be. Were still trying to figure out what we can do best."

"It was one game out of 16," Spurrier said. "Who knows what our teams going to be like? It worked out for us last week. If we play a lot of three-point games were probably going to lose our share. We need to get better and try to make a few more big plays."

There were isolated stretches last year when Spurrier would rediscover Stephen Davis powerful running ability, then reverse course and start throwing every down.

The next test comes Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, whose banged-up secondary must look inviting for a pass-oriented attack.

"Were going to try to keep a good balance," Ramsey said. "You kind of play the hot hand. Thats what we were able to do last week."
