Garner roamed Veterans Stadium. Except, for the past couple weeks, the short-and-shifty Westbrook hasn''t looked like a change-of-pace.

He''s looked like "The Pace."

In the past two games, Westbrook has led all Eagles running backs in carries (22), yards (160) and touchdowns (2) while establishing himself as one of the offense''s most dangerous weapons.

"I like having the ball in my hands," said the second-year running back. "It gives me the opportunity to do the things that come naturally to me. As long as I am doing good things with it, hopefully they will continue to give it to me."

While Westbrook fits the stereotypical third-down back mold . small, speedy and quick with great hands . thus far this season he has been a first and second-down back as well.

When the Eagles needed to run out the clock in their 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills, it was Westbrook who was in the backfield. When they needed to do the same against the Redskins last week, it was Westbrook who was in the backfield.

On both occasions he broke a touchdown run that helped seal the game.

"I like having [the ball] any time really," said Westbrook. "In the middle of the game, in any part of the game. I like getting touches."

Westbrook has accounted for 354 yards on 38 touches (9.3 avg.), including rushing attempts and kickoff returns. He has also rushed for a touchdown each of the last two games, including a 62-yard score against Buffalo and a 19-yarder against Washington.

That said, Westbrook understands that the Eagles are not looking for a feature-type back . at least not yet. They currently have two other players who they feel can help carry the load in veteran Duce Staley and third-year player Correll Buckhalter. Both players have seen action throughout the team''s first four games, with Staley''s playing time about equal to Westbrook''s.

"I think I have the ability to [carry the load], but on this team we don''t need that right now," said Westbrook. "We have three guys that can play and three guys that are capable of carrying
