Belichick likes to plead ignorance when it comes to injuries, which strains credulity given his 28 years of NFL experience and penchant for detail. But that stance has nothing to do with the media. It''s all about finding an edge in a league where the talent is even and games are decided by inches and half-steps.

Belichick''s style is validated by the Vince Lombardi Trophy sitting in his owner''s office.

"I''m not saying we''ve got all the answers," Belichick said this week. "I''m just saying it''s right for us. There is some element of a competitive edge there. Maybe sometimes it''s negligible. Other times it may be more.

"I know fans have a great interest in the team, and the media is the main conduit. But holding information from fans is not what we''re out to do. It''s a matter of strategy and protecting the people involved. Particularly with injuries. In most cases the players don''t want the information out there. It''s not something everyone is comfortable with."

Felger went on to state: "Ultimately, Belichick''s methods are about winning games."
