were saying like 12 weeks. I didn''t want to be out that long. I''ve played through pain a lot through my career, so I''m not scared of playing through pain. It''s something I want to do."

More than four weeks after the injury, McDonald still has some discomfort in the thumb.

"But it''s nothing I can''t handle," he said. "I tore a ligament. So it''s probably going to be painful all season. I''ll just have to deal with it. It''s not that bad to where I don''t think I can play with it."

McDonald dressed but didn''t play Sept. 28 against Arizona -- the Rams'' last game before their bye week. He was an emergency wide receiver, slated to play only if someone got hurt.

He plans to break a sweat against Atlanta, and has been lobbying -- unsuccessfully, so far -- to get the cast removed for the game.

"The way they wrapped it up was kind of bad (for Arizona)," McDonald said. "It was a little too bulky. It was almost like a half-club I had on. I can catch with it. But it''ll be a lot better if I didn''t have it on."

Thomas added that McDonald had a couple passes "doink" out of his hands in individual drills on Monday, seemingly indicating that the cast was affecting his pass-catching. But he finished off practice strongly.

"They''ve trimmed the cast down," Martz said. "They''ll even do it more for the game. But he really practiced well. I was very impressed with his practice."

Meanwhile, it''s more of a slow-go for Curtis, who is pessimistic about playing against the Falcons.

"If I had to play today, I don''t think I''d really be too effective out there," Curtis said. "It''s still sore. The soreness really hasn''t gone away. The more weight I put on it, the more I feel it."

It''s not that Curtis can''t run on the leg. "But it definitely doesn''t feel like it was before it happened," he said.

At the time of his injury, Curtis was the No. 3 wide receiver on the depth chart, behind only Bruce and Holt. He was enjoying an impressive preseason with nine catches for 175 yards, including a 66-yard TD catch against the Bills.

But that was six and a half weeks
