5847,25,6,'Rams Hope Rookie Receivers Add "Sizzle..."','In an article published Tuesday, St. Louis Post Dispatch staffer Jim Thomas reminded readers that for three record-setting seasons, Ricky Proehl was the steadying influence, while Az-Zahir Hakim provided the sizzle as complementary receivers to starters Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

But Hakim left following the 2001 season for Detroit; Proehl signed with Carolina following the ''02 campaign.

Four games into this season, the Rams appear to have found the "steady" in Dane Looker, who has 14 catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. They''re still searching for the "sizzle."

But help is on the way from rookies Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald. McDonald has been sidelined with a thumb injury since the season opener, against the New York Giants on Sept. 7. Curtis has been out since the Rams'' third preseason game, suffering a broken leg Aug. 23 in Buffalo.

There appears to be no doubt that McDonald will play Monday night against Atlanta, outfitted with a small cast to protect the thumb. The outlook isn''t so rosy for Curtis. He returned to practice Monday but remains gimpy on the leg and may need another week or two.

There''s no doubt that head coach Mike Martz''s playbook will expand with one or both of the speedsters back in the lineup.

"You start to incorporate them in different things," Martz said. "It kind of depends on the matchups. ... But it gives you another avenue to go to. It''s less constricting in terms of what you do offensively. It gives you a little bit more freedom."

McDonald, a fourth-round draft pick from Arizona State, caught six passes for 46 yards against the Giants, finishing the game despite the thumb injury. He had the option to have surgery after that game, but decided instead to immobilize the thumb in a cast and let it heal on its own.
