Vikings officials say they would have welcomed back Chamberlain if he had reported in better shape. There were reports -- disputed by Chamberlain -- that he weighed in for the Vikings nine days ago at 269 pounds, 21 pounds heavier than the team wanted him.

Chamberlain was barred from practicing or training during his suspension, and said he worked out with a trainer in Arizona. The Redskins weighed in Chamberlain at 264 pounds and say that he moved well and caught the ball smoothly during Friday''s workout.

For what it''s worth, Chamberlain said his suspension resulted from his use of a product that he did not know contained ephedra.

"I put myself in that position," Chamberlain said. "I kind of had to deal with the consequences of that, and [being released] was part of it. ... It was something that had [ephedra] in it, and I didn''t know it had it in it. I thought I was taking a safe product, and it turns out it wasn''t." Del Rio apprised former starter Mark Brunell of the permanent change via a phone call on Tuesday, the players'' day off, then confirmed the move to the media at Wednesday''s practice. Brunell, the Jaguars'' starter for the previous eight seasons and the first three games of ''03, will serve as No. 2 quarterback when his left elbow has completely healed.

Brunell injured the elbow in a Sept. 21 loss at Indianapolis and required five stitches to close an open wound. He has not played since. The elbow injury provided management and the coaching staff the excuse to elevate Leftwich to the top of the depth chart.
