"I''m not where I want to be as far as football conditioning," he said. "There''s no way to simulate that. There''s no way to simulate the on-the-field pounding, the getting up after hard hits. But I feel that given about a week or two, I''ll be ready as far as football shape goes."
Chamberlain, 31, could be the pass-catching threat at tight end that the Redskins had been seeking since the offseason. He was released last week by the Minnesota Vikings, who felt he was too far out of shape when he returned to the team following a four-game suspension by the NFL for testing positive for the banned stimulant ephedra. After an impressive workout last Friday, he signed a two-year contract Monday that, with incentives, could be worth slightly more than $2 million.
Chamberlain has 163 receptions in eight NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos and Vikings. He had 57 catches for Minnesota in 2001, when he reached his first Pro Bowl.
Redskins tight ends have only six receptions this season -- five by Robert Royal and one by Zeron Flemister, who was released Monday. Wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner have combined for 55 catches, and Chamberlain said he hopes to complement them.
"I don''t know if they''ve ever had a tight end with the receiving ability that I have -- not bragging on myself, but that''s what I do," he said. "Hopefully I''ll just be another weapon in the machine."
Spurrier''s offense is known for focusing on the wideouts, not the tight end, as receiving targets. But team officials hope that Chamberlain can be effective near the opponent''s goal line and a safety valve for quarterback Patrick Ramsey when defenses blitz.
