the chance to start and line up across him is bizarre."

A week after making his first touchdown reception in the NFL, Burleson is starting in place of No. 2 receiver D''Wayne Bates, who will miss his third consecutive game with a bruised left foot. Kelly Campbell started the past two games because he is Bates'' direct backup.

However, the coaching staff thinks Burleson, a third-round draft pick, deserves to start Sunday because of his all-around skill and blocking ability.

Bates is expected to play again when the Vikings return from their bye week against Denver on Oct. 19. However, Burleson likely will continue to get more playing time, even if Bates starts.

"We know how polished and ready he was when we first looked at him," Vikings receivers coach Charlie Baggett said. "But he''s just continued to make tremendous strides once he got here. About midway through the first mini-camp we knew we got something pretty good to work with. He''s just so advanced for a rookie. He is ready for this start."

Long term, Burleson may have answered a major issue for the Vikings, who looked at upgrading their receiving core during the offseason. No one is ready to say Moss and Burleson will become as productive as Moss and Cris Carter were together during Moss'' first three seasons with the team. But Burleson should be a starter for several seasons.

"I like our receiving situation for the long haul," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan
