Patten (questionable, knee) also sat out Friday after having practiced Thursday.','10/4/2003','4:20:00 PM','Saturday',252 5824,21,5,'Pennington Throwing; Aiming For Early November Return...','According to the New York Times, Chad Pennington practiced throwing passes for about 15 minutes Friday, his most extensive throwing workout since he fractured and dislocated bones in his left wrist during a preseason game.

Pennington, who wore a sweatsuit, stayed far away from the rest of the Jets as they went through a strenuous practice in advance of a two-day break. The Jets, 0-4, have a bye this week. They return to practice Monday to prepare for their Oct. 12 game against Buffalo.

Pennington has said that he wants to return to the lineup either by Nov. 2, when the Jets play the Giants, or Nov. 9 against the Raiders in Oakland.

Head coach Herman Edwards said Friday that though it was reassuring to have Pennington back on the field, "he won''t be part of the grand solution."

Edwards added: "It is not like last year. I don''t want to paint that picture that Chad is going to come in here on his white horse and everything is going to be all right. When he comes back, that will be great, but we have to get our players to perform better and we have to help them."

Edwards, who demoted wide receiver Curtis Conway earlier this week and elevated Santana Moss to the starting spot, said he would not make other changes to the starting lineup. Yet, he regularly took out his starters during Friday''s practice and said that he planned to do the same against Buffalo.

Newark Star-Ledger staffer Dave Hutchinson reports that backup quarterback Brooks Bollinger, a sixth-round pick, has looked sharp in practice this week. And despite comments by Edwards that Vinny Testaverde is still the No. 1 quarterback, there continues to be rumbling that Bollinger may get the call if the offense continues
