Pope is aware of Shockey''s frustration, but sounded unconcerned about it.

"I think the standard has been set kind of high," Pope said.

Shockey missed much of the preseason with a broken rib that has since healed, but its effects might have lingered well into last month.

"Think of having a cracked rib and running into a 300-pound truck. That hurts," Pope said. "You get to be a little tentative. You make little changes in what you do and it affects how you play. But I think he''s healthier right now than he was, maybe, at any time last year."

It is a matter of Shockey working himself back to that level of production.

"I haven''t really felt comfortable in the sense that I did last year," Shockey said. "Last year, I had a chance to get in a rhythm, from the first preseason game, and just kept going. And now, (there is) no rhythm. It seems like I''m just out there."

And that is why Shockey often has seemed more restrained on the field this season. Of course, a couple of dropped passes, including in the end zone against Dallas, haven''t helped. But not even his twisting, one-handed reception for a first down against the Redskins impressed him.

"I haven''t really showed (my exuberance) that much this year because I haven''t got into a rhythm," he said. "I got to get into a rhythm. For me, I''m not happy with myself and the way I''ve played. If I make one good catch, wow, it doesn''t matter. I''ve got to get into a rhythm and get to where we were at the end of last year. That''s the most important thing to me."

Shockey was minimizing the positive effect he has on the Giants offense, which ranks seventh in the NFL in points per game and sixth in total offense. He constantly draws the attention of opposing defenses, sometimes three defenders on a play, which helps to widen lanes for receivers Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer to operate. Often benefiting from single coverage, Hilliard leads the Giants with 17 catches for 175 yards.

"You can''t just look at [Shockey''s] numbers," Kerry Collins said.
