6029,17,9,'Bennett Activated From From PUP...','It''s official. ... The Vikings on Friday activated Michael Bennett from the physically-unable-to-perform list, making him eligible to play in Sunday night''s game against the Green Bay Packers.
Minnesota opened the season with six wins before losing to the New York Giants last week. The Packers are in second place in the NFC North.
Bennett underwent surgery on his left foot last spring after injuring it in a freak treadmill accident. After suffering a setback in training camp, Bennett was placed on the PUP list.
A first-round pick in the 2001 draft, Bennett rushed for 1,296 yards last season -- the second-best mark in franchise history -- and caught 37 passes for 355 yards.
Moe Williams and rookie Onterrio Smith helped the Vikings rank seventh in the NFL in rushing offense in Bennett''s absence. Williams leads the team with 508 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, and Smith added 217 yards on the ground.
At this point, there''s no reason to believe Bennett will make a significant contribution this week.
And according to St. Paul Pioneer Press beat man Bill Williamson, Smith is ready for a bigger role and likely will get one. He may even take over for Williams as the starter for a few games.
With Bennett still more than a month away from being able to start, Smith will have a window of opportunity. Williams will remain a key receiver out of the backfield and on third downs.
Also of interest. ...
According to the Sporting News, Kelly Campbell, who missed last week''s game with a strained calf, will play this week. Despite the return of D''Wayne Bates, Campbell will remain the No. 3 receiver. Bates is fourth on the depth chart for now.
