"I took every rep in practice [Thursday]," Johnson said. "Everything''s cool."

Johnson, who has not been listed on the Bucs'' injury report this season, vehemently denied a St. Petersburg newspaper''s report that he has a "sore throwing elbow." The 12-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler did not participate in Wednesday''s practice, which sparked the rumor.

Head coach Jon Gruden backed his starting quarterback, confirming that Johnson does not have an elbow problem or a problem with arm strength.

"I rested him," Gruden said. "Week 9 of the season, sometimes that''s a good thing to do. Brad Johnson''s thrown [250] passes. He took a lot of hits on Sunday, too many hits, and I want to keep him off his feet, and that''s just part of the program that we used last year and part of the program that we''ll use this year.

"He looked great to me [Thursday]. We''d like to give him some better looks in the pocket. We''ve got to clean up our protection, which wasn''t up to par last week."

Johnson has been sacked four times in the past two games.

Gruden pointed out the lack of protection but also lauded Johnson for the deep passes he has been able to complete despite breakdowns with the offensive line.

"He threw a 75-yard touchdown pass against San Francisco, and he threw a [40-yard] pass to [Keenan] McCardell in the same game," Gruden said. "I don''t know what
