to do that, he said. I dont think thats wise knowing that its broken because you do run the risk -- even with protection, you run the risk of it displacing -- of further injury, which could result in something worse than whats there. But Im willing to take that risk.

Head coach Mike Sherman listed Favre as probable on Wednesdays injury report.

Well just play it by ear, said Sherman, who closed practice to reporters this week in part because of Favres injury.

Favre admitted his thumb hurts like hell.

There is always the possibility that the thumb could worsen to the point where he cant play, or he could start the game but be unable to finish it.

Favre played with perhaps a more serious thumb injury in 1999, when he sprained it on a similar play during a preseason game. He admitted Wednesday that there were times that injury prevented him from making certain throws.

Being able to throw 10 or 15 yards (with) a decent spiral with no rush is not near as difficult as being counted upon to make a big play in a tough situation, Favre said. As I talk to you right now, I feel like Im able to do that. Im basing that on last week and knowing Ive got several more days.
