Favre threw only a handful of passes during practice on Wednesday, mostly to try out different kinds of protective coverings for his thumb, which has a hairline fracture under the thumbnail. He and team trainers will continue to experiment with different ways to tape his thumb, but Favre might not practice extensively before Sundays game.

It will still be broken this week, but I think its doable, Favre said. We can protect it a little bit within reason. I dont want to take away from being able to throw the ball, but Ive also got to have some protection for it. Its kind of a tug of war right now between me and our training staff.

Favre suggested the teams medical staff might have tried to convince him to sit out a week, which would end his starting streak at 180 straight games.

I understand their side of it, Favre said. Its like, Hey, we would rather you not play first of all and fix this, but we understand that you want to play. Letting you do that, we have to have some form of protection. Im fine (with that), but I have to have some freedom to be able to throw.

Favre said he threw with a splint on Wednesday and although it felt awkward, he was able to throw effectively.
