Jose Mercury News staffer Daniel Brown reports that Jeff Garcia was excused from practice Wednesday because his sprained left ankle is not getting any better. Though it is not uncommon for Garcia to get a day off because of a nagging injury, head coach Dennis Erickson spoke more cautiously than usual.
"He''s really sore," Erickson said. "We''re just not sure. I would assume that he would play Sunday. I''m not sure what his practice schedule is going to be. Hopefully, he''ll be able to do something tomorrow. But it''s swollen and pretty sore. It''s probably worse today than it was yesterday. Actually, it''s probably worse today than it was Monday."
Garcia suffered the ankle sprain during Sunday''s loss to the Cardinals. He was unavailable for comment Wednesday, but a day after the game he said there was no question about his availability for the game against the Rams.
Garcia, 33, has been plagued by a series of injuries this season. He missed two exhibition games and two weeks of practice in training camp with a bulging disk in his back. During the regular season, he has been bothered by a groin strain and a forearm bruise to his throwing arm that has affected his wrist and thumb.
All of which might explain why he''s not playing up to his usual standards.
Garcia owns a 72.0 passer rating, which is the second-lowest mark through the first half of the season for a 49ers quarterback since 1981. He also owns the lowest mark, checking in with a 62.3 rating after the first eight games of the 1999 season after he was forced into action after the career-ending concussion Steve Young suffered.
"Being the harshest critic of myself, I don''t necessarily want to put the blame on my injuries," Garcia said. "I do believe I haven''t played up to the level of expectations this year. I just have to continue to fight to improve and create better opportunities for myself.
