A former standout at Villanova, Westbrook showed his uncanny ability to turn the corner while still moving at full speed on a six-yard scoring run in the first quarter against the New York Giants. But it was the punt return that gained most of the attention, including NFC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
"Were happy that Westbrook is doing what hes doing," said Donovan McNabb. "He is pretty much the highlight on offense. Hes the big-play guy.
"I think what we have to do is follow along with his lead. Whenever you have a guy that does such a great job for you on the offensive side and on your special teams, you sort of have to feed off of him."
As Westbrook shines, his role on the team continues to evolve. Just a month ago, he was still looking for the first touchdown of his career. Last weekend, he became the first Philly running back to score touchdowns in four straight games since Ricky Watters in 1996.
And this past Thursday, offensive coordinator Brad Childress did what Reid has been hesitant to do all season: Name a starting running back.
When asked if its fair to say Westbrook is now the teams primary back, Childress said: "He is."
Childress quickly added that Correll Buckhalter and Duce Staley are also integral parts of the attack. But right now, Westbrook is the starter.
And that''s as definitive an official statement as I''ve seen on the subject since training camp opened.
