one remark -- that may or may not be appropriate or make a lot of sense -- and all of a sudden it''s on the national wire," Edwards said. "Aside from presidents or generals, who is under that kind of pressure?
"It''s legitimate for the guy to step back and say, OK, let me assess and re-evaluate this. Even if that becomes a story, well, it''s better than some other headline where he spends the rest of his life trying to expunge it from his obituary."

Has Owens value on the free-agent market really plummeted to the extent that team consultant Bill Walsh indicated early last week while co-hosting a radio show?
The former 49ers head coach said Owens has gone from being worth a $20 million signing bonus to no more than $10 million, based on his early-season play.
And while their sources believe his estimate is a bit harsh, Pro Football Weekly suggested on Monday that Owens has been unusually tentative and prone to shying away from contact since suffering a concussion after a hit by the Rams Aeneas Williams in Week 2.
PFW added that Owens full-speed route-running has left a lot to be desired.

According to the Sports XChange, one of the most overlooked aspects of the team''s offensive success last Sunday was fullback Fred Beasley, whose play inspired more two-back formations as the 49ers rushed for 212 yards. "We might as well put a 60 number on him," head coach Dennis Erickson said of the numbers given to offensive linemen. "He''s in there hitting those linebackers all day. ... He knocked the living heck out of those linebackers."
A measure of his efforts can be found in the fact Garrison Hearst has racked up 472 yards rushing on 99 carries, as he continues to share the load with Kevan Barlow. Hearst and Barlow generally rotate every other series during the course of a game. Hearst is averaging 4.8 yards a carry, while Barlow has rushed for 4.4 yards an attempt.','10/25/2003','3:20:00 PM','Saturday',421
