when Owens last displayed his oratory skills at the postgame podium, after a lopsided loss to the Vikings, he vowed that his candid reviews of the 49ers would be a weekly staple.
"I''m just doing my job as a leader on this team," Owens said Sept. 28. "I''m going to talk when we win and I''m going to talk when we lose."
And that was it. He has been silent since. And don''t expect to hear from him after Sunday''s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Apparently Owens -- after seeking advice from Harry Edwards, a UC-Berkeley professor and team consultant -- concocted a strategy: Shut up and play. Edwards said former 49ers stars Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig all did the same thing at some point, taking time out from interviews to clear their heads.
Something worked. Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Owens did something worth talking about -- delivering six catches for 152 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown reception.
"I think his performance the last couple of games shows that he''s focusing more on football. He''s dealing a little bit less with the off-the-field football issues," Edwards said. "And I think that''s good for him.
"People may not believe it, but those guys really feel that burden of dealing with the media. The smart ones from time to time do say, `Let''s see if I can reverse-engineer this and find out where the train may have left the tracks.''"
Owens created controversy after a close loss to the Cleveland Browns by questioning the play of the offensive line. A week later, against the Vikings, TV cameras caught him screaming at offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. Afterward Owens said "We have no heart." His statements resulted in huge headlines and, worse, annoyed teammates.
According to Edwards, Owens approached him during the firestorm with the idea of keeping a low profile for a few weeks. Edwards, who teaches sociology of sport, gave him the green light.
