Vikings placed kick returner John Avery on injured reserve Friday and activated Nick Davis, in a move that will add depth at wide receiver for tomorrow''s game against the Giants.
This after D''Wayne Bates was downgraded to questionable because of a hamstring injury, although Tice said Bates "did pretty good" in practice Friday. Bates has missed the past four games because of a foot injury.
Tice said Bates was downgraded because he has less of a chance of playing than receiver Kelly Campbell, who is probable. Campbell missed most of practice for a third consecutive day because of a calf injury.
If Bates and Campbell can''t play, rookie Keenan Howry and Davis will be the third and fourth receivers, respectively, behind Randy Moss and Nate Burleson.
Tice said he isn''t concerned.
"If we have a problem, we''ll go with [tight end Jim Kleinsasser] in the slot or we''ll [use two tight ends]," Tice said. "We have enough packages."
Tice said he is eager to see Howry play receiver. Howry has been mainly a punt returner.
"I like Keenan; he''s a smart football player," Tice said. "I can''t wait for him to catch a hitch route and see what he can do with it."
Meanwhile, Davis was removed from the physically unable to perform list a week earlier than expected. He had a shoulder injury.
Davis averaged 20.4 yards on kickoff returns and 7.9 on punt returns as a rookie last season. He might return kicks, although running back Doug Chapman is expected to fill Avery''s role as primary kickoff returner.
"We''ll see how Nick''s eyes look," Tice said. "If they''re inside his head, I might [let him return kicks]. If they''re popping out, I won''t. Nick had a little bit of that popping-out-of-the-eye-socket stuff going on last year."
As for Avery....
"John has a four-month injury," Tice said. "I knew something was wrong with him, so he''ll get treatment, and we''ll get him healthy. We''ll have his rights for next year,
